Dr. Mithileysh Sathiyanarayanan, a well-known scientist, was motivated and inspired by Dr. Lakshmana Rao and went on to pursue his PhD and Post Doctoral at the University of London. Dr. Mithileysh established this prestigious scholarship in admiration of Dr. Lakshmana Rao, a living legend, and former Head of Department - Chemistry, St. Aloysius Degree College, Cox Town, Bengaluru.
Dr. Lakshmana Rao’s exceptional contributions to Chemistry have profoundly impacted students, researchers, and the academic community. This scholarship aims to honor the professor’s unwavering dedication to education, research, and mentorship by supporting outstanding students who embody the values of academic excellence, innovation, and commitment to making a difference. Dr. N. Lakshmana Rao, born on November 20, 1950, is a distinguished Indian chemist and educator based in Bangalore. He holds a Master of Science in Chemistry and a Doctorate in Chemistry from a reputed university.
With an illustrious career spanning over 35 years, Dr. Lakshmana Rao served as the Head of the Department and Professor of Chemistry at St. Aloysius College, Bangalore, from July 1975 to November 2010. After retiring from St. Aloysius College, he continued to make significant contributions to the field of chemistry education. Currently, Dr. Lakshmana Rao is an Honorary Scientific Advisor at MIT Square Group.
As a passionate mentor, Dr. Lakshmana Rao has trained and guided thousands of students in chemistry. He has been an expert resource person, delivering lectures to chemistry teachers across Karnataka on effective teaching methodologies, inspiring students, and fostering a love for chemistry. His efforts have played a key role in keeping educators updated on the latest developments in the field.
Over 16 years ago, he co-founded the Karnataka State Chemistry Teachers’ Forum, which has now grown to over 5,000 members. Recognized for his leadership, he was appointed as the Honorary President of the forum. Under his guidance, the forum published a widely acclaimed Chemistry Laboratory Manual, benefiting students and teachers across Karnataka. Additionally, the forum released a Chemistry MCQ book to aid students in preparing for national-level engineering and medical entrance exams.
Dr. Lakshmana Rao has also contributed as a subject expert in exam preparation, assisting in designing question papers for various competitive examinations. His mentorship has extended beyond academia, helping numerous chemical engineering students complete their final-year projects. He was invited by IEEE in Hyderabad to deliver a talk on enhancing science education at the secondary school level.
Even at the age of 74, Dr. Lakshmana Rao remains actively involved in lecturing and mentoring teachers and students. With a teaching career spanning nearly five decades, he has taught and inspired over 40,000 students, many of whom have become renowned scientists, doctors, professors, pharmaceutical chemists, and educators across the globe.
Dr. Lakshmana Rao's exceptional dedication to education has earned him multiple Best Chemistry Teacher Awards from various chemistry associations. Recently, the organization Chemistry Warriors honored him for his invaluable service to the student and teaching community.
His advice to students remains timeless:
"Be humble, sincere, kind, God-fearing, respect elders, and use your knowledge to serve society and humanity."
